Richard M. Truesdell, age 88, graduated from life peacefully on Monday, July 28th, 2014, in Hospice Care at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by family and his pastor.
He was born May 8, 1926, the older of two sons of Albert and Wilma. Dick was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and continued living in Linn County his entire life. Following high school, he proudly served in the United States Navy as a radio man, and then entered the University of Iowa as an electrical engineering student. In June of 1950, Dick graduated with his degree, married his love, Janette Taylor of Cedar Rapids, and started his 37-year career at Collins Radio. While Dick’s career was important to him, his faith and family and friends continued to be the things he valued the most throughout his life.
Dick had a zest and love for life that surely was admired by all that met him. He had many different hobbies and activities he delved into but none as much as hunting, fishing, and wood carving. Hunting with his family in Spencer, Iowa, fishing with his buddy Dale Hovden and different family members at Ghost River Camp (1950-2010) in Ontario, Canada, and wood carving next door with Larry Sylvester and other carversand other carvers offered such special memories for Dick. He was the handiest of men and built a beautiful home for Janette (Jay), and their seven children on an acreage in Cedar Crest Woods. Tom, Jan, Sandi, Scott, Jackie, Julie, and Christy all have hundreds of memories growing up in the country in this wooded area overlooking the Cedar River.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 34 years, his son Scott, and his brother Albert (Bud). Dick is survived by his beloved six children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild and many special friends and extended family.
Loving father, fun filled grandfather and great grandfather, exuberant friend, faithful church member, we will miss your humor, your love of nature and people, and your silly ways.
A visitation will be held at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids on August 8, 2014 from 4:00-7:00.
