Richard D. Swalley, 79 of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at St. Luke?s Hospital, from complications of pneumonia. Services: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Fred Leighty from the Word of God Lutheran Church for the Deaf. Visitation: 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include Una M. Swalley, Doris Ciha; children, Alan Swalley, Kathy (Larry) Solem, Sharon Schreckengast, Bonnie (Clark Jones) Schliemann, all of Cedar Rapids, Alex Swalley of North Liberty, Mary Burkholder, John (Wanda) Ciha of Cedar Rapids, Dennis Ciha of Pekin, IL, Keith (Mary) Ciha of Coggon; 21 grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Lucille Swalley of Cedar Rapids, and Julia Goodall of Arkansas; and a brother, Arnold Swalley of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ed, Robert, Vernon, Leland and Dale; and sisters Dorothy and Audrey.
Richard was born March 17, 1923, in Clinton, Iowa to Edward and Gladys Swalley. He married Una M. Swalley, April 22, 1949. Richard worked at Evergreen Packaging (Cherry Burrell) for 33 years, retiring in June 1984. Richard will be greatly missed by all of us who loved him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in memory of Richard.
