Richard N. Steffen, 80, of Earlville, Iowa died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Family will greet friends from 2 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 10 with a scripture service at 2:00 p.m. and one hour before services, Wednesday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Earlville.

Richard was born May 31, 1928 in Luxemburg, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna (Meyer) Steffen. On August 30, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ivanelle “Nellie” Knipper at the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. The couple lived in Dyersville, Holy Cross and Ryan before settling on their farm north of Earlville in March 1951. They operated their dairy farm until 1975 when they retired and moved into Earlville. Richard continued to doing custom harvesting and chopping and selling Pioneer Seed for many years.

Richard was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville. He had a long standing love of baseball, John Deere equipment, farming and family.

Richard is survived by four children, Becky (Merlin) Demmer of Farley, Mike (Donna) Steffen of Earlville, Trudy (Mike) Nurre of Dyersville and Sallie (Dennis) Hunt of Epworth; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virgie (Irvin) Singsank of Luxemburg, Germaine Wilwert of Cascade, Joan (Jim) Esch of Dyersville; one brother, Ralph (Ann) Steffen of Dyersville; one sister-in-law, Esther Steffen of Edgewood, and one son-in-law, Leo Wegmann of Delhi,

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Steffen; his wife, Ivanelle “Nellie” Steffen in 2006; a daughter, Karen Kay Wegmann in 1999; a grandson, Carl Demmer in 1976; three brothers, Leo (Monica) Steffen, Raymond (Frances) Steffen, Arthur Steffen; one sister, Marie (Emmett) Winter and one brother-in-law, Norbert Wilwert.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Richard’s memory.
