Richard Gerald "Jerry? Smock, 75, of Delaware, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood, after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, November 21, 2003, at the Greeley United Methodist Church, Greeley, with Pastor Nancy M. Bender officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, and for an hour before services on Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Grant View Cemetery in Greeley, Iowa, with military rites by the Dubuque Co. AmVets Post 13.

Richard was born on June 17, 1928, in Colesburg, Iowa the son of Glen J. "Jake? & Jessie F. (Morley) Smock. He attended school in Greeley. On January 17, 1946, Richard entered the U.S. Navy serving as a Yeoman on the U.S.S. Compton during World War II. Upon his discharge in 1947, he returned to farming with his parents in the Greeley area. On November 19, 1954, Richard was united in marriage to Linda L. Pugh in Elkader, Iowa. Throughout Richard?s life he was a heavy equipment operator and over the road semi-truck driver.

Richard was a member of the Greeley United Methodist Church and the Dubuque AmVets. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, listening to bluegrass music and Tennessee Ernie Ford. Richard also enjoyed his morning coffee with friends at the Delaware truck stop.

Richard is survived by his wife, Linda Smock of Delaware; his five children and their spouses, Jeffrey & Marge Smock of Des Moines, Patti & Kevin Klosterman of Greeley, Laurie & Robert Tibbott of Manchester, Deanna & David Thommen of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, and Jennifer & Travis Heyer of Dundee; ten grandchildren; his mother, Jessie Smock of Edgewood, a brother and his wife, Glen J. "Junior? & Mattie Smock of Dubuque, and a sister and her husband, Phyllis & Gene Amthauer of Strawberry Point.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Glen "Jake? Smock, one niece and two nephews.
