Richard L. Smith, 53, of 116 35th Street Drive S.E., Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics, Iowa City, following a short illness. Services: 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Duane Hix, Military honors will be held. The family will greet friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Roseann; his daughters, Valerie Anne (Matt) Smith-Neer of Binghamton, New York and Amy Marie Smith of Cedar Rapids; a son, Richard L. Smith, II of Hiawatha; six grandchildren, Brandon Butler, Ezekiel Neer, Emmanuel Neer, Isaiah Neer, Robert Smith and Alexia Smith; his mother, Isabella Smith of Utica, NY; six sisters, Marie Fox of Cold Brook, NY, Laurie Johnson of Poland, NY, Katherine Caldwell of Utica, NY, Maryanne (Herman) Gonzalez of Utica, NY, Isabelle Major of West Mifflin, PA, and Marguerite Hart of Cold Brook, NY; two brothers, Harry (Selma) Smith of Utica, NY and Paul (Marge) Smith of New Hartford, NY; brother and sister-in-law, Gabriel and Shelly Gigliotti of Greenville, IL; mother-in-law, Rose Gigliotti of Greenville, IL; and various nieces and nephews; and his dog, Lady.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward; and two brothers, Bill Smith and Kenny Smith.

Richard was born April 13, 1953, in Utica, NY, the son of Edward and Isabella (Wayman) Smith. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam Conflict. On July 31, 1976, he married Roseann Gigliotti in Utica, NY. He was a truck driver for Cedar Valley Transport for the last seven years.

Military honors by the American Legion Hanford Post #5.

Richard was a loving husband, father and grandfather and his wife?s best friend and soulmate.
