Richard Carl Schwertfeger Sr.

Richard Carl Schwertfeger Sr., 84, of Fairfax, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2016. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Burial: Zion Cemetery, Williamsburg, Iowa.
Richard was born August, 29, 1932, in Deep River, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Dora (Refer) Schwertfeger. He served his country in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. He married Sharon Kay Hohenshell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on July 12, 1957. Richard worked at Cherry Burrell for 37 years before retiring in 1997. Richard was a lifetime member of Fairfax American Legion Post # 572.
Richard was very proud to have served his country. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved the special family events.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; children, Rachel Noel, Jacki Schwertfeger, Richard Schwertfeger Jr., Sandy (Charles) Munson; special grandchildren, Richard Schwertfeger III and Cheyenne Schwertfeger; nine other grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and his sister Mary Lou (Wally) Hawker.
Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Trudy Schwertfeger; parents; siblings, Louis (Dolores) Schwertfeger, Dorothy (Harlan) Rieck; daughter, Candace Schwertfeger; and granddaughter, Mandy Schwertfeger.
The family would like to say a special Thank You to the grandchildren, Adam, Kylie, Aric, Macie, and Cheyenne for taking care of their Poppa.
