Richard D. Pike, 83, of Central City, died Saturday, November 1, 2003, at the Monticello Nursing & Rehab Center, Monticello, after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at United Church of Christ, Central City, by the Rev. Jonna Jensen. Friends may call at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial: Boulder Cemetery, Prairieburg, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; a daughter, Colleen (Gary) Schulz of LaPorte City; a son, Stuart (Patricia) Pike of Monticello; six grandchildren, Ryan, Bryce, Kyle, Jessica, Samantha and Daniel; three stepgrandchildren; and a sister, Mavis McCallister of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Audrey; and a brother, Paul.
Richard was born the son of Daniel and Hazel Story Pike on February 19, 1920, near Central City. He served in the Army during World War II. On May 24, 1943, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Ellen Wilson in Central City. Richard farmed for many years near Prairieburg. He was a member of United Church of Christ; Central City American Legion Wapsi Post No. 421; National Farmers Organization; and was a Kiwanis member. He had served as a director on the board of Farmers Co-Op Exchange and the Central City School Board.
Richard wrote the farm satire column titled " News from Muddy Manor? by Scoop Deeply for the Cedar Rapids Gazette for five years. He also enjoyed writing poetry and playing cards.
