Richard A. Novotny, 82, of Marion, died Monday, April 20, 2015, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Marion, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors provided by American Legion Post #298 of Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; children, Becky Dotson of Marion, Scott (Tracy) Novotny of Cedar Rapids, and Mike Novotny of Marion; three grandchildren, Melanie Suberla of Schaumburg, IL, Jessica Novotny of Streamwood, IL, and Nichole Zilinger of Bourbonnais, IL; step-granddaughter, Lauren Burton of Jamesville, New York; three great-grandchildren, Allisa Suberla, Christopher Zilinger, and Leah Zilinger; siblings, Marvin Novotny of Denver, CO, and Phyllis Wells of Marion; sisters-in-law, Dianne Beatty of Atkins, IA, and Carol Ness of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Novotny; sister, Marlene Tipton; and brother, Edwin Novotny.
Richard was born March 11, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Adolph and Edith (Martin) Novotny. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean War. Richard married Betty Jean Ness on March 5, 1955, at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Atkins. He worked as a cable technician with Northwestern Bell until his retirement. Richard was a member of Lutheran Church of the Ressurection, Past Master of Masonic Lodge #6, Past High Priest of Royal Arch Mason, Foot Patrol for the Shriners, Eastern Star #183 of Marion, and Marion American Legion Post #298 of Marion. Richard was a generous man, willing to help his neighbors whenever possible. He enjoyed trips to Art’s Auto Clinic for coffee and to listen to Czech music. Richard loved to hunt with his sons, daughter, and friends. He and Betty enjoyed their many travels to many countries overseas.
