Richard George McWherter, 71, of 2600 Carlton Lane, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at home, following a long illness. Private family services will be held. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; his children Susan (Robert) Hanlin of Montour, Wesley (Cindy) McWherter of Grand Junction, Colorado, Jay (Nancy) McWherter of Cedar Rapids, Daniel (Valley) McWherter of Truro, Lory (Josh) Coustry of Iowa City and Todd (Carrie) McWherter of Viola; and his grandchildren, Chad, Matt, Wendy, Megan, Mandy, Jacob, Morgan, Steven, Lillian, Zakkary, Rebekah, Seth and Phoebe.
Also surviving are his sisters, Barbara Smith, Bonnie (Ike) Smuck and Belva (Al) Kenny; his brothers, Robert (Jean) McWherter and Rodney McWherter; his mother-in-law, Lucille Strauss of Toledo, Iowa; his sister-in-law, Betty Ealy of Tama; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronald; and a sister, Beverly.
Richard was born February 22, 1933, the son of Aaron and Ruby (Day) McWherter in Nevada, Iowa. On June 10, 1956, he married Barbara Strauss in Buckeye, Iowa. Richard served with the U.S. Army. He worked for Martin Marietta as a Heavy Equipment operator and superintendent for many years. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman.
