Richard Dean Matheny, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, following a sudden illness. Private family services will be held. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Cemetery, at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 54 ½ years, Betty; children, Kim (Ray) Aitkins of Brighton, Iowa, Kevin (David Lawson) Matheny of California, and Alan (Dulce) Matheny of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Ashley Carvin of Brighton, Trevor Matheny of Fort Bliss, Texas, and Julie Toro of Guadalajara, Mexico; great-grandchild, Kadence Howell; brother, Robert Matheny; and two sisters, Marge Beitz and Helen Brown.
Richard was born August 10, 1937, the son of Joseph and Abbie (Schimkey) Matheny, in Center Point, Iowa. He graduated from Alburnett High School. On December 18, 1959, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Timms at the United Methodist Church in Marion. Richard worked for FMC and then for Goss in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed going to the casino, working jigsaw puzzles and playing candy crush on his Kindle.
