Richard Mackey, 82, of Ely, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a Vigil at 5:00 p.m. Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016, at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Barbara of Ely, Iowa; children, Timothy (Dana) of Cedar Rapids, Dennis of Ely, Iowa, Doug (Vanessa) of Ely, Iowa, Barb (John) Matias of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Andy (Michelle) of Ely, Iowa; grandchildren, Brad (Andrea) Mackey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mark Mackey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Eric (Alicia) Mackey of Ely, Iowa, Phillip Matias of New Haven, Connecticut, Craig Mackey of Ely, Iowa, Kristina Matias of Dallas, Texas, and Willow Mackey of Ely, Iowa; one great-granddaughter, Kelsey Mackey of Ely, Iowa; former daughter-in-law, Kim Mackey; sister-in-law, Lois Mackey of Hiawatha; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert R. Mackey; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Richard was born on May 21, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son of Robert and Laura Marie (Kinzey) Mackey. He graduated from St. Patrick’s School. Richard was a life-long farmer retiring in 2014. On October 7, 1956, he married Barbara Leeper in Pharr, Texas. Richard was a member of St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed restoring tractors, basketball, football, deer hunting in his younger years, and 4th of July annual picnics. Richard’s family and farm work were his life.
