Richard W. "Jack" Wood, 83, of Center Point, died at his home on Friday, October 18, 2002, following a sudden illness. A service honoring his memory will be held on Monday, October 21, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., in First Christian Church, a congregation of Disciples of Christ in Center Point. Interment will follow at the Urbana Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. John Caughron. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Center Point.
He is survived by his sister, Ruth Butterfield, of Center Point, his sister-in-law, Margaret Wood, of Cedar Rapids, and by six nephews and two nieces.
Jack was born in rural Urbana on April 22, 1919, to Frank M. and Effie (Dale) Wood, who preceded him in death, as did his brothers, Curt, Mike and James, with whom he engaged in the trade of plastering.
Jack was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, and he had served the church in almost every capacity, from Custodian to Elder. At the time of his death he was serving as Secretary for the Sunday School as well as an Elder.
A veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II, Jack was a member of American Legion Dye Benion Post 297, and often served as lay chaplain for post ceremonies. So ingratiating was his personality that he even neutralized the enmity of the German prisoners of war whom he guarded in France.
He served his community for many years as a school crossing guard, and he delivered daily meals on wheels to senior residents in the wider Center Point area. Next to his affection for church and family, Jack was a dyed-in-the-wool Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan.
He leaves a wide circle of friends, from young schoolchildren to the most senior of citizens, and he leaves an exemplary record of church and community service. He was a friend to everyone.
Memorial gifts may be directed to First Christian Church of Center Point.
