Richard Alan Harger, 62, of Center Point, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a three year battle with multiple cancers. Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, by the Rev. John Caughron. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Center Point Cemetery, Center Point with military rites.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki; his son, Jeffrey Alan of Center Point; his siblings, Dorathy (Dick) Harger of Ely, Don Howard Harger of Anamosa, Arnold (Ruth) Harger of Marion, Carol (Stanley) Peterson of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, Bonnie Harger of Iowa City and Mary Ellen Simpson of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David; and a sister in infancy, Marilyn.
Richard was born July 15, 1946, the son of Joseph and Mildred (Robinson) Harger, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended school at the Alburnett and Toddville Schools. On June 11, 1966, he was united in marriage to Vicki Kennedy at the First Christian Church in Center Point. Richard served his country with the United States Army. Sergeant Harger was a Section Chief of B Battery 6th Battallion 29th Artillery 4th Division in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967, where he received the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, Army Commendation with Valor and Vietnam Service Medal.
For 34 years, Richard was President of H & H Construction and took great pride in his work. He enjoyed all forms of hunting, also fishing, gardening and looked forward to the yearly reunion of his B Battery friends. Richard was a charter member of the Blue Creek Chapter Ducks Unlimited, American Legion Dye Benion Post 297 and Spotswood DeWitt Chapter of the National 4th Infantry Division Association.
