Richard A. Hale, 86, recently a resident of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died there Saturday, January 17, 2009, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Tom McDermott. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a Vigil Wake at 5 p.m. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Military honors will be provided.
Survivors include his children, Terry Hale of Iowa City, Tim (Gloria) Hale, Randy (Karen) Hale, and Ron Hale all of Cedar Rapids, Georgia Hale and Nancy (Tim) DeNiro both of Tucson, Arizona; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brother, Stan (Char) Hale of Edgerton, Wisconsin; and sister, Ardith Condry of Anamosa, Iowa.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; parents; brother, John Hale; and sisters, Dorothy Huebner and Marjorie Kehoe.
Born in Anamosa, Iowa, on August 3, 1922, Richard was the son of Clifford and Mabel (Cowdry) Hale. He was united in marriage to Marjorie McNeil on April 9, 1947, in Postville, Iowa. She died in 1998. Richard served with the Sixtieth Signal Battalion in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was employed by the Cedar Rapids school system, retiring in 1987.
Richard was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, the VFW, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Richard loved singing and music. He was involved in various singing groups when he was younger and was a drummer in the Postville Drum and Bugle Corps. He was known for his great sense of humor.
He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.
