Richard “Dick” Ernest Groth, Jr., loving husband and father, 68, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021. A celebration of life service for Dick will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at Squaw Creek Baptist Church in Marion.
Dick was born in Cedar Rapids in 1952, to Richard Sr. & Martha (Coberly) Groth, and grew up on a farm near Shellsburg. On May 12, 1973, he married the love of his life, Carol Anne Seng. They raised two children together, Scott and Lisa. Dick received his Computer Programming degree from Kirkwood Community College and worked at Rockwell Collins for 37 years. In his retirement, he drove a bus for Linn-Mar schools, greeting the children and youth on his routes by their names, playing music and brightening their day.
Dick was a wonderful family man, a devoted husband to his wife Carol of 48 years, and encouraging father to his son Scott and daughter Lisa. Dick loved the great outdoors, particularly spending time in the Rocky Mountains looking for wildlife with Carol. He loved hiking and camping with Scott, vacationing and daily phone chats with Lisa. Fishing and rock hunting with his grandchildren were also favorite hobbies. Dick was known for sharing God’s Word at every opportunity, his positive attitude, and always had the most welcoming smile.
Dick was a devout Christian who put God first. He was a positive role model for many, and had a passion for serving in the AWANA and Sunday school programs at Squaw Creek Baptist Church. He also enjoyed many hours volunteering as a leader in Boy Scouts.
Dick is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Carol Anne Groth of Marion; son, Scott (Nicole) Groth of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Lisa (Curt) Switzer of Lakeville, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Emily, Chloe, Isaiah, Lucienne, and Whittaker; one sister, Sandy Koppen of Shellsburg; one brother, Donald Groth of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Martha Groth; and three infant siblings.
