Richard W. "Dick? Diehl, 82, a resident of Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, January 2, 2003, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Ron Lewis. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife Carmen; two sons, John Diehl and wife Marcia of Bartlett, Illinois, and David Diehl and wife Nancy of Des Moines, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Josh Diehl, Seth Diehl, Jody Diehl and Danielle Aeschebacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife.
Dick was born October 2, 1920, the son of Donald and Jennifer (Schaffer) Diehl, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1942, Dick married Antoinette Vampola, with whom he had two sons. She died in 1975. He later married Carmen Ammeter in 1976. Dick was a teacher and coach for many years at Prairie Jr. High School. He was Field Director at Ellis Park softball fields, a past officer of the Cedar Rapids Softball Association and a member of the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame. He also coached and officiated several sports over the years and was a Mason. Dick loved to fish, play pinochle and enjoyed traveling.
