Richard “Dick” Ryan, 85, of Manchester, Iowa, died at his home on Monday May 7, 2007 following a sudden illness.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester by Pastor Jill Mack. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour before the service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Dick was born November 20, 1921 in Manchester, the son of Mary A. (Welterlen) and L.M. Ryan, Sr. He attended the yellow school north of Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School in 1938. Dick then attended Midland Radio School in Kansas City, MO. On December 31, 1942, Dick was united in marriage to Helen M. Gearhart at the All Saints Church in Des Moines. Dick worked at United Airlines in Des Moines before serving in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-1945. He returned to United Airlines and worked as supervisor. In 1950, Dick moved to the family farm north of Manchester.
Dick was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Quarter Horse Association, served as secretary on the Creamery Board and director of the Eastern Iowa Race Horse Association. He also coached Manchester Little League. Dick enjoyed fishing and bowling.
Dick is survived by his wife, Helen Ryan of Manchester; two children, Kathryn Guilgot and Michael (Linda) Ryan, both of Manchester; five grandchildren, Rick Guilgot, Suzanne (Pat) Meyers and Deirdre, Katie and Christopher Ryan; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Guilgot and Claire and Leah Meyer; in-laws, Audrey (Henry) Leonard and Jean Shaffer, both of Manchester; and a first cousin, Sam (Helen) Thielke of Mesa, AZ.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, L.M. and Mary Ryan; two brothers, Roger F. Ryan and L.M. Ryan, Jr. in infancy.
