Richard E. “Dick” Olson, 91, of Springville, died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at his home. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Springville First United Methodist Church, Springville. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Springville Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma; children, Betty (John) Herndon of Des Moines, Richard E. (Vida) Olson II of the Phillippines, Melissa (John) Davidson of Springville, and Deborah (Tom) Hilleary of Portland, OR; brother, Edward (Fran) Olson of Fort Worth, TX; 7 grandchildren, Sarah, Robin, Stephanie, Richard E. III, Jolene, Jason, and Justin; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet; brother, Roy Olson; and granddaughter, Stacey Meier.
Dick was born February 10, 1922, in Fort Dodge, IA, the son of Roy A. and Betty (Noelle) Olson. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served on the U.S.S. Earle during WWII. Dick married Violet Verholt on November 28, 1944. Violet died in 1989. He then married Wilma Coates on February 24, 1991. Dick worked for General Electric as an Electrical Engineer for over 30 years. He loved golfing, tennis, bowling, and dancing, and enjoyed spending his winters in Sun City, Arizona.
