Richard “Dick” Leroy Kohl passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with Military Rites.
He is survived by his sister, Diane Smith of Cedar Rapids; children, Jacqueline (Gerald) Creger of Miles, Iowa, Ronald (Darla) Kohl of San Antonio, Texas and David (Holly) Kohl of Jacksonville, Florida; ten grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Kohl.
Dick was born to Earl and Evelyn (Smith) Kohl on July 14, 1929. He was a lifelong sports fan. Dick started playing little league baseball in 1938, for the Waltonians. He played on the varsity baseball team at McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. Dick also played AAU basketball after graduation from McKinley in 1947. He attended the University of Iowa from 1948-1949. Dick married Madonna Jean Meyer in September of 1950, and he was drafted into the United States Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War as a forward observer. Dick was employed with Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric for 40 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family boating on the Mississippi River. In April 2009, Dick moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. His family is very grateful for the care that he received at the facility.
