Richard "Dick? DeVere Johnson, 72, of lifelong resident of Marion, currently of 319 Pebble Lane, Hiawatha, died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City of a sudden illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2006 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion with Rev. John Johnson officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Oakshade Cemetery, Marion.
Dick is survived by two children, Elaine (Gary) Barr of Cedar Rapids, Rick (Ann) Johnson of Marion; his companion, Kay Crowley of Marion; a sister, Jean (Jack) Carley of Marion; a brother, John (Linda) Johnson of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan & Logan Barr and Jayme, Erick & Nathan Johnson; a great-grandson, Bailey; and many other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Belva; a grandson, Danial; brother, Bill; and two sisters, Marsha and Millie.
Dick was born July 21, 1934 in Iowa City, the son of Marshall and Ruth (Wilcox) Johnson. On January 14, 1956, Dick was united in marriage to Belva Lenz in Marion. She died August 16, 1990. Dick was employed at Longview Fibre for 32 years, retiring in 1991 as a supervisor. He then was a shuttle driver for Mike McGrath for 10 years. Dick especially enjoyed organizing the breakfast get-togethers with the S.O.B.S. group.
He was an avid Hawkeye fan and also enjoyed bingo and trips to the casinos. Dick was an active grandfather who loved going to his grandchildren?s sporting events. Dick was a loving man who touched many lives. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
