Richard “Diamond” J. Barrett, 72, of Atkins, Iowa, passed away in his home, Friday, November 16, 2007, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mike Andrew of Atkins Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends from 2 to 6 p.m. today (Sunday) at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Dick is survived by his special friend of 30 years, Judy Irish and their family, Kevin (Stacy) Irish of Coggon, Julie (Steve) Chamberlain of Cedar Rapids and Kim (Jay) Montague of Norway; grandchildren, Dustin (Jennifer) Davis and their children, Blake, Samantha and Alex, Kandace (Jeff) Furler, Lacy J. Montague and fiancé Brandon Cook, Nathan Montague, Levi Montague, Cory Chambers, Ben Chambers, Ashley Bortz, Kody Irish and Kaitlin Irish.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dick was born August 28, 1935, the son of Richard and Mary Louise (Cavinee) Barrett in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended Tarkio High School and enlisted with the United States Navy in 1954. Dick traveled the world with the Navy for ten years. “Diamond” retired as a truck driver from West Side Salvage due to poor health in 2005. Dick loved the sea and big “Ole” trucks.
The family thanks Drs. Boddicker, Fusselman, Lanager and their staffs and Amber, Lorrie, Julie and Kristin with St. Luke’s Hospice for their caring assistance.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Dick.
