Richard "Rich? Caraway, 66, of 3812 Yellow Pine Court NE, Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, December 11, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Rev. Del Bear, with military honors. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his loving companion of 27 years, Ellen Griffin; three children, Matthew Caraway of Cedar Rapids, Cheryl Aswegan of Walker, and Carl Caraway of Cedar Rapids; two stepchildren, Edward Griffin of Cedar Rapids and Barbara Sheriff of Canyon City, Colorado; a sister, Betty Carsner of Marion; a brother, Larry (Barb) Caraway of Marion; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren, including Theresa Driskell of Cedar Rapids and Nico Griffin of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews including, Karen (Greg) Zierath of Marion and Kurt Krog of St. Louis, Missouri.
Rich was born August 8, 1938, the son of Archie and Elsie (Topping) Caraway in Cedar Rapids. He served with the U.S. Navy for twenty-three years, serving aboard the USS Leahy Guided Missle Cruiser (CG 16), which he helped launch and commission. Rich then worked in maintenance at the Oakdale Correctional Facility for over twenty-five years, retiring in July of 2004.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy in Rich?s memory.
Military honors will be provided by Marion American Legion Post 298.
