Richard Dean Burger, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, February 24, 2010, in the Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha, Iowa. Private services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, February 26, 2010, at the funeral home. Private Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughter, Diane Hawkins of Marion; stepson, Richard (Vonda) Mumm of Colorado; grandchildren, Damon Hawkins and Dannette (Trent) McQuiston; great grandchildren, Taylor and Madeline McQuiston; two sisters, Arlene McGuire of Marion and Doris Akers of Colorado; brothers-in-law, Vern Kelchner of Cedar Rapids, Paul Henle of Shellsburg and Don (Shirley) Henle of Central City; sisters-in-law, Paulette (Dave) Hughes of Cedar Rapids and Sandy (Don) Ellis of Florida; numerous nieces and nephews; and his father-in-law, Wayne (Evelyn) Henle of Cedar Rapids.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Wynette; an infant son, Carl Lloyd Burger; and his sister, Phyllis Kelchner.
Born August 13, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, Dean was the son of Carl and Leona (Marshall) Burger. He attended Wilson School. On August 6, 1949, he was united in marriage to Wynette June Mumm. She died January 8, 1970. On September 22, 1975, in Cedar Rapids, he married Patricia Henle. Dean served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked for FMC Link Belt Speeder.
Deans’s joys were watching sports, bowling, playing cards and taking care of his yard. He was very competitive with a dry sense of humor and wonderful smile.
