Ray H. Hillers, 74, of Manchester, Iowa, died Saturday morning, June 19, 2004, at his home after a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Delaware. Pastor Dale Critchley will officiate. Friends may call from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, and for an hour before services on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.
Ray was born on November 28, 1929, in Delaware, Iowa, the son of Martin F. & Lorna M. (Mussehl) Hillers. He attended St. Paul?s Parochial School, Delaware, and then graduated in 1946 from Delhi High School in Delhi. Ray farmed with his parents until entering the U.S. Army in 1952. He served in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge in 1954, Ray worked as a butter and cheese maker for the Earlville Creamery and later the Manchester Creamery. Ray was united in marriage to Muriel A. Munger on August 26, 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church in Manchester. In 1957, Ray went to work in construction as a crane operator. In 1982, he went to work for Larson Construction in Independence. Ray retired from Larson?s in 1995 as a foreman.
Ray was a member St. Paul?s Lutheran Church, M.S., Delaware, where he served in many church offices. He continued to serve his country in the U.S. Army Reserve after his discharge from active duty. Ray was a member of the American Legion Post #45 in Manchester.
Ray is survived by his wife, Muriel A. Hillers of Manchester; his three children, Ramona (Mark) Schultz of Monroe, Michigan, Rodney (Betty) Hillers and Myron (Rebecca) Hillers, all of Crystal Lake, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Emily and Stacey Schultz; Lucas, Lindsey and Lauren Hillers; Zechariah Hillers, Kyle Smith, and Daniel (Andrea) Smith; three great grandchildren, Dakota, Hunter, and Saylor Smith; two sisters, Marlene Reth of Manchester and Marilyn (Roger) Marvel of Glenwood, Iowa; a brother, Martin O. (Lillian) Hillers of Manchester; a brother-in-law, Clifford H. Berndt of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Rosemary (Marvin) Bosler of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.
Ray was preceded by his parents, Martin & Lorna Hillers; a brother, Walter Hillers; and two infant sisters and an infant brother.
In lieu of flowers, the Hillers family request memorials be directed to either St. Paul?s Lutheran Church, Delaware, Iowa or Delaware County Hospice of Comfort at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, Iowa.
