Raymond J. "Ray? Bissell, 70, of 905 Hillview Drive, Marion, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, after a long illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by Chaplain Harold Scheer. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Ann; three daughters, Joann (Steve) Barker of Arizona, Sharon (Russ) Beauregard of Central City and Debi (Kevin) Anderson of Utah; sons, Vernon (Lee) Bissell of Tennessee, Darrick (Lisa) Bissell of Nevada, and the son who adopted Ray, Barry (Judy) Walsh of Marion; his best buddy, Scooter; twenty-two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Viola, Clara, Violet, Lucille, Virginia and Evelyn; and three brothers, Calvin, Earl and Ben.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clarence; and his first wife, Raynelle.
Ray was born January 21, 1936, the son of Ray and Leora Wenkstern Bissell near Arlington, Iowa. He graduated from Arlington High School. Ray first married Raynelle Chettinger, then married Ann Edwards on June 1, 1973. A businessman in Marion for over fifty years, he owned and operated Ray?s DX station over forty years, the last eight years as Ray?s Auto Service. He retired because of declining health this past May.
Ray was a member the Cedar Rapids 700 Club and was past president of the Cedar Rapids Bowling Association, where he was a Sponsor of the Year. He and Ann were avid bowlers and took many enjoyable trips with friends to bowling tournaments throughout the United States. Ray also loved his Canadian fishing trips and enjoyed hunting deer.
