Raymond Taft Ashlock, 94, of The Meth-Wick Community, died there Thursday, October 30, 2003, following a short illness. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2003, at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 17th and Washington SE.
Raymond was born January 7, 1909, the son of William S. and Emma (Spaulding) Ashlock, on a farm outside Center Point, Iowa. Raymond?s ancestors were early settlers of Linn County. His great-grandparents James and Belinda (Wyckoff) Ashlock came to rural Center Point in about 1840. Another great-grandfather, William Spaulding, arrived in Cedar Rapids in the mid-1850?s.
He graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Commerce, in 1929, and moved to Cedar Rapids in the early 1930?s. On May 30, 1936, he married Marguerite Herr.
Raymond entered the life insurance business in 1933 and joined Connecticut General in 1939. He worked into his middle 80?s. He served many years as manager of the firm?s Cedar Rapids office and became a Life Member of the Connecticut General "President?s Club?. He was chosen Man of the Year for the region in 1968.
Raymond received the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1958. He served in all offices and several terms as President of CR Association of Life Underwriters. He served all offices in Cedar Rapids Estate Planning Council. He was president of the Cedar Rapids Toastmasters Club, officer of the Optimist Club and a member of B.P.O.E. Elks. Raymond was a member of the First Congregational Church since 1936. He served on fund-raising committees for many civic groups. Raymond joined Elmcrest Country Club in 1949.
As a member of the Chamber of Commerce speaker?s bureau, he gave many dramatic readings of Civil War letters written by his grandfather, Samuel Spaulding, 20th Iowa. Raymond served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a hospital apprentice, 2nd class. Raymond Ashlock also enjoyed golf, gardening, fishing, and playing the clarinet.
Survivors include his daughter, Annette Ashlock Stover of Evanston, Illinois; his son, William Ashlock of Andover, Massachusetts; and four grandchildren, Susan and Jennifer Ashlock and Stephanie and Scott Stover. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite.
The family requests no flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the The History Center, 615 1st Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52401. Private graveside services will be held Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Arrangements have been made by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
