Ray E. Wickman, 84, of Manchester, died Friday, May 30, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Masonville, Iowa. Visitation will be on Monday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Masonville.
Ray was born December 22, 1923 in Colesburg, the son of William H. and Emma M. (Haas) Wickman. He graduated from St. John’s High School, Ryan, in 1942. Ray served the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II. On August 26, 1947, Ray was united in marriage to Rachel A. Lahey at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Castle Grove. The couple farmed in Prairie Township and retired to Manchester in 1998.
Ray was a member of the Ryan American Legion Post and Farm Bureau. He farmed as a steward of the land. Ray’s hobbies included playing cards, golf, wildlife, fishing, hunting, fish dinners at Masonville, traveling and driving. Ray had a deep love for his wife, Rae Ann. The couple enjoyed wintering in Zephyrhills, Florida. Ray was always proud of his children and grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his wife, Rae Ann Wickman of Manchester; eight children, Jim (Shirley) Wickman of Manchester, Mary (Herb) Fangmann of Rowley, Larry (Jan) Wickman of Masonville, John (Nancy) Wickman of Cordova, TN, Tom (Teresa) Wickman of Germantown Hills, IL, Julie (R.J.) Jacobson of Arroyo Grande, CA, Jerry (Kim) Wickman of Friday Harbor, WA and Joan (Jerry) Howe of Tigard, OR; 26 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Lorraine) Wickman of Ryan; and a sister, Grace Carradus of Dundee.
Ray was preceded in death by two infant children, Lawrence & Edward Wickman; his parents, William & Emma Wickman; and a brother-in-law, Roy Carradus.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be directed to a fund to be established in Ray’s honor.
