Ray was born September 12, 1935, the son of Albert and Bertha (Leverenz) Oltrogge in Harlan Township Fayette County, Iowa. He served with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. On November 23, 1963, he married Julia Fink at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died November 23, 1988. Ray worked at Farmstead for nearly 30 years.
Ray was a life-long Cubs fan, foregoing an opportunity to play with the team as a young man. He attended a game at Wrigley Field with his sons, sons-in-law, and grandsons for his 70th birthday. An avid card player, Ray also loved to hunt and fish. He was a little “rough around the edges,” but had a generous and giving heart.
