Ray Manning Hull, DVM, died May 10, 2009, at the Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha, IA. Ray Hull was born July 8, 1924, in Lytton, IA, to Homer Francis and Helen Madora (Cornish) Hull. He graduated from Lytton Iowa High School, and from Iowa State University, Ames, IA, in 1945, with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. At the age of 21, “Doc Hull”, began his veterinary practice in Wall Lake, IA, and continued there until he retired 47 years later. Ray was a captain in the Army Veterinary Corps during the Korean Conflict. He loved his career as a veterinarian and wrote three books of his experiences after he retired. Ray and Judy moved to Marion, IA, in 1994.
Ray married Elva Anne Kriz on February 3, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, IA, and they had three children: Bradley, Mary Anne, and David. He later married Judith “Judy” Yarger Polley on June 14, 1975. He is survived by his wife, Judith; and children, Mary Anne (Don) Nelson of Cedar Rapids, IA, David (Elizabeth) Hull of Edmond, OK; step-children, Malcom (Cheryl) Polley of Indiana, PA, Michael (Janet) Polley of Wapello, IA, Jonathan (Becki Amborn) Polley of Marion, IA, and Erika (Curt) Lancaster of Ridgecrest, CA; one granddaughter, Kristina (Bringham) Hull; 14 step-grandchildren; and two step great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his son, Bradley; his parents; four sisters; and three brothers. Burial of cremains will be in Cedar Twp. Cemetery in Lytton, IA at a later time.
The family extends their respect and thanks to the Hiawatha Care Center staff for the excellent care and tireless love shown to Ray during his lengthy illness. Special thanks are extended to Jerry Bumgarner for his friendship and visits with Ray over many years. Ray prized his friendship.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at the Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion. A Celebration of Life will be held at Marion Christian Church, led by Rev. Robert Bromley and Rev. Thomas Fogle at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be shared with Hiawatha Care Center and Marion Christian Church.
