Randall Louis Byrne, 52, of Ryan, Iowa died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa, following a brief illness, surrounded by his family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at the St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Ryan, Iowa with Father Dennis Miller officiating. The family will greet friends, Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, where there will be a Rosary at 2:30 pm and a Scripture Service at 7:30 pm. Burial with full military rites, by Ryan Legion Post 692, will be at the Calvary Cemetery, Ryan, Iowa.
Randy was born August 14, 1950, the son of Dan & Lois Byrne. He attended St. Patrick?s Catholic School in Ryan and Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi, before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in November of 1967. Randy proudly served his country for four years in the Vietnam War. He earned numerous medals for his bravery, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant E-5 in August of 1971. Following his tour of duty, Randy returned to the Ryan community where he farmed and performed electrical work for the remainder of his life. He was a long time member of the Ryan Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the American Legion. Randy was a leader and was active in many civic and social affairs in the Ryan community. He enjoyed sports, playing pinochle and being in the company of friends.
Randy was a big-hearted man, had a friendly smile, and always lent a helping hand to others. He will be missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Randy is survived by his parents, Dan & Lois Byrne of Marion; four brothers, Richard of Marion, Michael (Bonnie) of Davenport, Terry of Davenport and John (Joan) of Bettendorf; eight sisters, Becky (Matt) Gannon of Davenport, Mary of Marion, Julie of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Debi (Scott) Elmer of Corvallis, Oregon, Lori of Marion, Patti (Ron) Iverson of Dubuque, Kim (Dan) Greder of Colo, and Michelle (Jason) Ribble of Iowa City; and 18 nieces and nephews.
Randy was preceded in death by his infant brother, Martin Byrne, his paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Randall L. Byrne memorial fund.
