Ralph E. "Spud? Simmen, 80, of Central City, died Friday, May 7, 2004, in his home, following a long illness. At Ralph?s request there will be no memorial services. Friends may call today (Sunday) from 3-8 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City. Private family inurnment will take place at Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City, with military rites, at a later date.
Survivors include his wife LaVerne; two sons, Steve Simmen and special friend Michele of Cedar Rapids and Dave Simmen and his wife Julie of Central City; a sister, Esther Clemans of Alburnett; and a sister-in-law, Joan Simmen of Central City.
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Serena, Zach, Jacob, Sarah, Valerie and fiancé Aaron.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, Jake and Lera Flitsch and a brother, Robert Simmen.
Ralph was born the son of Harry and Emma Hoeak Simmen on December 1, 1923, in Alburnett. On May 29, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, he was united in marriage to LaVerne Bader. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ralph was employed by Alburnett Farmers Elevator for over thirty-three years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 421 in Central City, which will conduct the military rites.
Ralph enjoyed family, friends, hunting, fishing and mushrooming.
