Ralph “Hap” Sweaney, 100, of Delhi died Saturday April 17, 2010, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester. Services will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home, Manchester by Father John Kremer. The family will greet friends Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until service time. Private Graveside Services: St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Delhi.
Hap was born December 3, 1909, the son of William and Hattie (Richie) Sweaney, in Delhi, Iowa. He served his country with the United States Army Air Corps. On July 29, 1939, Hap was united in marriage to Izetta Miller. Hap founded the Delhi Home Improvement Company and specialized in custom built cabinets and furniture for customers from across Eastern Iowa. After retirement, he enjoyed travel, bowling, photography and each July 4th participating in the Peachtree Roadrace in Atlanta, GA with his grandchildren. Ralph enrolled in several art classes at Kirkwood Community College and was an active and well known painter until his death.
Survivors include his sons, David (Anne) of Athens, GA, and Dennis (Jane) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four grandchildren, Kirsten Evans of Rogers, AR, Sean Sweaney of Knoxville, TN, Heather and Christopher Sweaney of Athens, GA; three great-grandchildren, Sophie and Max Evans and Adelaide Sweaney; and a sister, Ethel Ongie of Delhi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hattie Sweaney; and his beloved wife of 47 years, Izetta who died in May 1986; and three siblings, Ruby, Kenneth and Lynn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Heritage Bank, % Ralph “Hap” Sweaney Park Beautification Program, 311 Franklin Street, Delhi, IA 52223, in memory of Hap and Izetta.
