Rachel L. Workman, 81, of Cottage Grove Place, died Sunday, September 17, 2006, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. There will be no visitation; however, the family will greet friends following services at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Friends Cemetery near Paullina, Iowa.

Rachel was born at Springville, Iowa, the daughter of William E. and Esther (Rockwell) Workman. As a young child she moved to Paullina in northwest Iowa. It was here she attended Gaza Consolidated School and it was to this school she remained loyal throughout her life. She enjoyed attending the school?s banquet for all students. She also planned and attended class reunions for her graduating class at Friends Boarding School at Barnesville, Ohio.

In Cedar Rapids Rachel was a legal secretary working at the firm of Barnes, Wadsworth, Elderkin, Locher & Pirine for several years. She also worked for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and substituted at a day care center.

Rachel enjoyed being with family and traveling. She took several trips with her brother and his wife while they operated What Cheer Travelers. She and her sister also enjoyed trips together. Caring for babies was also a favorite time for Rachel.

Rachel is survived by her brother, Bob (Barbara) Workman of What Cheer, Iowa; her sister, Olive Hegstrom of Sioux City, Iowa; seven nieces and nephews; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews. Also surviving are two extended families: the Locher-Knudten families in Cedar Rapids and the Laurence Dunn family in Oklahoma.

The family wishes to thank Dr. William Fusselman, the staff at the Iowa Blood and Cancer Center, the nurses at St. Luke?s and the St. Luke?s hospice team of Zola, Rose, Jamie and Beverly for their care of Rachel during her last illness. They also want to thank Joanne Kimber, a special friend, for her help throughout the past months.

It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to Camp Courageous in Rachel?s memory.
