Phyllis Elaine Happel, 82, of Marion, passed away from cancer on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at her daughter?s home in Sherman Oaks, California. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by the Rev. Scott Boone. Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday (June 5) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a parish vigil service will begin at 5 p.m. Graveside services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Stephens Cemetery, Atkins, Iowa.
She is survived by a son, Larry McLinden of Calabasas, California; three daughters, Susan Pecka of Hiawatha, Iowa, Beverly Blasingame and husband Steve of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and Mary Diane Rasmussen of Sherman Oaks, California; five grandchildren, Aaron, Christina, Kelsi, Lauren and Larry Jr., and two great-grandchildren, Rhianna and Donovan, who were all fortunate to have known and loved her. Also surviving Phyllis, are a sister, Katherine Pesek of Battle Creek, Michigan, and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Noreen; and three brothers, Wilfred, Vincent and Bernard McLinden.
Phyllis was born in Bay City, Michigan, on February 14, 1921, to William R. McLinden and Edith Mullins McLinden. She was raised in Detroit, Michigan, by relatives. Phyllis moved to Iowa, where she raised her children and for twelve years, co-owned the Country Café restaurant in Marion, Iowa, with Agnes Smith, her friend and mother-in-law from her first marriage. On July 5, 1967, she married Karl Happel, who passed away May 30, 1999. Phyllis and Karl owned a farm near Atkins, Iowa, where they enjoyed life surrounded by friends and family. After Karl?s death, Phyllis moved to Moundview Manor in Marion, Iowa, where she developed new friendships and continued to relish each day of her life.
Memorials will be used for a donation to Moundview Manor in memory of Phyllis.
