Phillip F. Schatzle, 89, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023, St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City, Iowa. Graveside service with full military honors will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023, at Coggon Cemetery in Coggon, with Reverend Sheri Anderson officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by Coggon American Legion and Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail.
Phillip was born on July 30, 1933, in Central City, the son of Lee and Jennie (Renfer) Schatzle. He was a 1952 graduate of Coggon High School. Phillip went on to serve honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, spending most of his time in the service stationed in Germany. On February 16, 1958, Phillip was united in marriage to Sandra Milroy at the Coggon Christian Church. He was an automotive mechanic for Knott Motor Co. for many years. Phillip worked for Carson Grain before working as a custodian for North Linn Schools for 10 years until his retirement in 2012. He was a member of Coggon United Parish, a former member of the Coggon American Legion, served on the Coggon City Council for 18 years, and was a volunteer firefighter for the Coggon Fire department for 30 years. Phillip enjoyed woodworking, camping, bird and squirrel watching. He recently got to experience the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington D.C. accompanied by two of his sons and his best friend, a fellow veteran. Phillip will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Phillip is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Sandy; children, Michael (Jody) Schatzle of Coggon, Charlene Siddell of Coggon, Dan (Debbie) Schatzle of Walker, Christine Schatzle of Coggon, and Deneen (Jon) Mangas of Coggon; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; sister, Norma Rowe of Coggon; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Greg Schatzle; son-in-law, Mitch Siddell; siblings, Donald Schatzle, Marie McDowell, Vera Lorraine Schatzle in infancy, and Charlotte Kepler; and great-grandson, Samuel.
