Philip A. Zieser, 66, of Ryan, Iowa, died at his home surrounded by his family on February 3, 2009, following a courageous battle with cancer.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Ryan, with Rev. John Flaherty officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 - 8:00 pm, on Friday, with a 3:00 p.m. Scripture Service, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, and for an hour prior to Mass on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ryan.
Phil was born on May 1, 1942 in Independence, the son of Joseph and Martha (Haxmeier) Zieser. He received his education at St. Patrick School in Ryan, graduating in 1960. Phil was united in marriage to Marilyn R. Steffen on April 15, 1972 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan. He was employed by Cedarapids Inc/Terex in Cedar Rapids for 40 ½ years.
Phil was a member of the Ryan Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief from 1983 - 1992 and received the 2008 Fireman of the Year award. He was a member of the 911 Board from the beginning and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan. Phil enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, watching NASCAR, and attending his grandkids activities.
Phil is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Ryan; four children, Shawn (Holly) Zieser of Masonville, Tony (Mary) Zieser of Ryan, Kate (Russ) Rahe of Dyersville, and Brian (Mandy) Zieser of Anamosa; seven grandchildren, Taylor Zieser, Kaleb Zieser, Hunter Zieser, Garrett Zieser, Connor Rahe, Eva Rahe, and Addison Zieser; five brothers, Jack (Pat) Zieser of Ryan, Kenny (Rose) Zieser of Coggon, Jim (Mary Jane) Zieser and Martin (Judy) Zieser both of Marion, and Bill (Ilene) Zieser of Leland; six sisters, Sister Dolores Zieser of Dubuque, Sister Josita Zieser of Storm Lake, Rosalyn Zieser of Unity, Wisconsin, Kathleen (Jerome) Callan of Manchester, Janice (Paul) Hildebrand of Marion, and Patricia (Dick) Cook of Manchester; and one sister-in-law, Marge Zieser of Independence.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Martha Zieser; two brothers and sister-in-law, Louie Zieser and Howard and Martha Zieser; in-laws, Harold and Marcella Steffen and two brothers-in-law, Gary Steffen and Rolly Gager.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are directed to the Ryan Fire Department or Regional Medical Center - Hospice of Comfort.
