Paul Smeins, 80, of Earlville, died Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Earlville United Parish Church by Pastor Jill Mack. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 17 at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville with additional visitation one hour prior to services at the church. Graveside Services with Military Honors: 2:30 p.m., November 18th at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.

Paul was born April 10, 1931 in Aplington, Iowa, the son of Fred and Anna (Bulten) Smeins. He attended Austinville High School and Aplington. Paul served with the United States Army from March 4, 1952 - February 22, 1954 during the Korean War. On September 14, 1955, he was united in marriage to Shirley Pies at the Ackley Christian Reform Church.

Paul worked as a heavy equipment operator for Jack Light Construction, Bob Beecher Construction, Dubuque Stone Products, and Delaware County Road Dept. for 10 years. Following retirement, he worked at the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.

Paul was a member of the Earlville United Parish Church, and the Carpenter-Diesch-White American Legion Post 436 in Earlville. Paul always enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's events. He was a Cardinals Fan, enjoyed playing his guitar - his signature song - "My Ding-a-ling". He had a strong faith, loved music, hunting and fishing with the kids, and was always joking around.

Paul is survived by his wife, Shirley Smeins of Earlville; two children, Lori (Mark) Corkery of Manchester and Lance (Dawn) Smeins of Earlville; six grandchildren, Duncan and Andrew Smeins, Greg, Ethan, April Saunders, and Amanda (Paul) Cox; four great-grandchildren, Xavier Cox, Brandon and Logan Keck, and Macy Deutmeyer; two brothers, Harlan (Martha) Smeins, EP (Anna Mae) Smeins; one sister, Genevieve Neymeyer; in-laws, Newton Clawson, Arlene Pies, and Gerald Whitmire.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Smeins, and one sister, Catherine.

A memorial fund has been established in Paul's memory.
