Paul G. Nissen, 89, a resident of Willow Gardens Care Center, died Thursday, March 22, 2007, at the care center, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Marion by Pastor Thomas Hedtke. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Kathy (Steven) Barltrop of Marion, Michael (Janelle) Nissen of Marion, Thomas (Sandra) Nissen of Jacksonville, Florida, Pat (Les) Warner of Santa Ana, California, a daughter-in-law, Nina Nissen of Hendersonville, Tennessee; eleven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a special friend, Judy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, John Nissen; three brothers, Alvin, Frank, and Elmer; and three sisters, Lydia Francke, Hulda McIlrath, and Marie Smith.
Paul was born November 11, 1917, the son of George and Dorothea (Holst) Nissen in Keystone, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. Paul married Jane Frances Shannon in St. Louis, Missouri in 1945. She died November 10, 1983. He worked at LeFebure Corp. for thirty-four years as a printer/pressman.
Paul was a diehard Democrat. He loved baseball and was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed watching the Hawkeye Women?s Basketball Team and was a season ticket holder. Paul was a member of St. Paul?s Lutheran Church and a past member of American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion. He also enjoyed gardening.
