Paul was born October 27, 1929, the son of Andrew and Eleanor (Brunen) Merritt. On September 22, 1947, he married Lorraine Simanek. Paul was involved in the carpentry trade for over 57 years. During those decades he aided in the construction and renovation of thousands of buildings throughout Eastern Iowa. He was widely considered a master carpenter. Paul also enjoyed gardening, mushroom hunting, the Iowa Hawkeyes, watching Chicago Cubs baseball, and spending time with family and friends at the cabin on the Wapsi. Paul?s greatest joy, however, came from his family. His mild and kind nature, along with his outstanding sense of humor, gave him a special bond with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His loyalty to them was only surpassed by his love for them.
