Paul Wesley Knapp, 91, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016, at Crestview Acres in Marion, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 28, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, Iowa. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2016, at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion with military honors provided by American Legion Post #298 of Marion.
Paul is survived by his children, Steve (Martha E.) Knapp of Williamsburg, Laura (Roger) Eller of Cedar Rapids, and Martha Knapp of Marion; grandchildren, Allen and Megan (Nick Gluba) Knapp, Maxwell, Valerie, and Dylan Eller, Hanna (Drew) Wood, and Aaron Petsel; great-grandchild, Auliver Wood; brothers, Ronald (Carol) Knapp, William Knapp, and Ernest Knapp; and sister, Ruby Drexler.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; sister, Retta Yiesley; and brothers, Perry, Claire and Kenneth Knapp.
Paul was born February 15, 1925, in Winchester, Kansas, the son of Fred and Stella (Pemberton) Knapp. He graduated from Marion High School in 1943. Paul served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a paratrooper. He received a Silver Star for saving a fellow soldier’s life, was wounded, and awarded a Purple Heart. On May 15, 1948, Paul married Shirley Heldt in Cedar Rapids. He was owner/operator of Palace Barber Shop in Cedar Rapids from 1948 until retiring in 2004. Paul was a member of the American Legion Post #298 in Marion. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and small engine repair but most of all, Paul was a people person.
