Paul G. “Club” Garner, 79, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Services: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Sharon United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Robert Dagit. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his children, Mike (Kandy) Garner of Cedar Rapids, Sue (Bob) Huber of Cedar Falls, and Tim Garner of Ames; four grandchildren, Chad and Andrea Huber, Karey (Brian) Dirks, and Quintin (Mary Gill) Garner; one great grandchild, Kayley Dirks; a sister, Lois (Earl) Ceynar. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a special friend, Sherron Watkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edna (Downey) Garner of Mt. Pleasant; his wife, Ferna (Lingenfelter) Garner; and stillborn son, Jonathan in 1960.
Paul was born on December 2, 1928, in Glasgow, Missouri. His family moved to Mr. Pleasant, Iowa in 1941. He was united in marriage to Ferna Lingenfelter on February 14, 1953 in Hernando, Mississippi.
Paul was a Korean War veteran. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a member of the Patrick Shanahan Post #788 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Paul was employed as a mechanic by Wilson Foods, later Farmstead Meat Packing House from 1959 until the plant closed in 1990. He was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
Paul’s passion was antique automobiles, particularly Fords. He belonged to several clubs, including the Antique Automobile Club of America, the Model-A Club and the Early Ford V-8 Club. He was the proud owner of three vintage Fords, personally restoring them from the ground up. Paul was widely recognized and admired for his expertise in repairing and restoring old cars. Many people sought his advice when fixing up their own vehicles.
Paul was a loving, caring, giving, intelligent and friendly man. He will be sorely missed.
