Patrick Harrington, 57, of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Ryan, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 following a sudden illness.
Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. Family will greet friends one hour before services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ryan.
Patrick was born June 4, 1952, in Manchester the son of Justin and Rose Mary (Benn) Harrington. He attended Maquoketa Valley School in Delhi, graduating in 1970. Patrick attended Coe College and was in the AFROTC. In 1974, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and successfully completed helicopter pilot training. Patrick was stationed in Korea and the Philippines where he flew HH-53 “Jolly Green” helicopters. Following these assignments, he attended fixed wing pilot training and subsequently learned to fly the C-5 “Galaxy”. Patrick’s last military assignment was with the 3rd Military Airlift Squadron, 436th Military Airlift Wing at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. He achieved the rank of Captain, flying missions throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East until 1986.
Patrick moved to Las Vegas in 2002, and worked for Household Finance and most recently HSBC. While at HSBC, he was involved in a number of their community outreach programs. Patrick had an avid interest in history, especially the civil war. He loved sports and was a dedicated baseball, football and golf fan.
Patrick is survived by his mother, Rose Mary Harrington-Carlton of Dyersville; one brother, John Harrington of Lakewood, CO; two sisters, Janet (Paul) Rath of Laguna, CA and Mary (Rick) Ruppel of Story City, IA; and one brother-in-law, Gordon Bickel of Dubuque, IA.
Patrick was preceded in death by his father, Justin Harrington; his step-father, Earl Carlton and one sister, Judy Bickal in 1990.
