Mary “Pat” Schloss, 79, died of lung cancer, Wednesday, June 27, 2012, surrounded by her family at her home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at St. Patrick’s Church, Cedar Rapids by Father Ivan Nienhaus. The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday, at the church with Rosary at 5:30. Her body was cremated and will be inurned at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. There will be food and merriment after the services at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall.
Survivors include her husband, Roger; children, Barry (Sandy) Schloss of Tabor, South Dakota, Kristy (Norman) Burchard of Hollister, California, Patrick (Teri) Schloss of Winthrop, Iowa, Tracy (Julie) Schloss of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bradley (Suzanne) Schloss of North Liberty, Iowa; sister, Ann Hale of Cedar Rapids; and brother, John (Sandy) Young Jr.of Cedar Rapids; ten grandsons; four granddaughters, one step-grandson; one step-granddaughter; and one step-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John “Frank” Franklin Sr. and Marguerite (Klinefelter) Young.
Pat was born October 4, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her parents were residing in Mt. Vernon at the time and that is Pat’s “Home Town.” On October 9, 1954, she married Roger J. Schloss at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lisbon. Pat and her family lived in Riverside, Iowa, from 1958 until 1998.
Pat was a mom and homemaker of five children and went to work for Owens Brush when her last child went to kindergarten. She worked there for 25 years and then enjoyed her retirement, from Oral B labs, and spending the winter in Florida. She loved the beach. She and Roger moved to Cedar Rapids in 1998 to be closer to most of their grandchildren.
Pat was a friendly, caring and outgoing person. She was Homecoming Queen at Mt. Vernon High School in 1951, served as President of St. Mary’s PTA and Pat was a member of The Riverside Bridge Club. Pat also served as First Lady of Riverside while her husband was Mayor.
