Owen John Schmoll

Owen John Schmoll, 81, of 3618 Stoneview Circle S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, December 23, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids of kidney failure. There will be no services. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; his son, Kerry Schmoll and wife, Hazel of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter, Lindsey Kliewer of Lincoln, Nebraska; and sister, Alice Huffman of Albany, Oregon and Apache, Arizona. Also surviving are his nephews, Loren, Russell, Steve, and Rodney Sell, all of Oregon; sister-in-law, Norma Pechl; and niece, Geraldine Velleck of Tyndall, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a half-brother, Ernest Evers; and a half-sister, Louise Silvernail.
Owen was born September 3, 1925, in Springfield, Tyndall South Dakota area, to Frederick and Katherine (Tierney) Schmoll. He served his country during the Korean War from 1950 - 1952. On November 23, 1960, he married Virginia Marie Mueller in Tyndall, South Dakota. Owen farmed with his father on land north of Springfield, South Dakota and on his own land west of Springfield, South Dakota. He also ran a truck line and did custom combining in the area for 10 years. Owen and Virginia owned clothing stores in Springfield and Wagner, South Dakota for 10 years. He was manager of the VFW Club in Mitchell. He then worked at the Walmart store in Cedar Rapids until he retired.
Owen was active in the Chamber of Commerce and other civic activities. He was a member of the Rotary Club, VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of a flying club in Springfield, South Dakota. He was also a member of the Hope Lutheran Church.
