Dr. Ondrej F. Hasek, 71, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center from prostate cancer.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Nancy, a son Vaclav Ondrej Hasek III of Marion, a daughter Barbara (Victor Hugo Rivera Monroy) Hasek of Baton Rouge Louisiana, and brother William of Scotch Grove Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents Vaclav Ondrej and Margaret and his sister Margaret Getner.
Ondrej was born April 12, 1938, in Cedar Rapids to Vaclav Ondrej and Margaret (McDowell) Hasek. He acquired passions for photography, playing cello, hunting, fishing, canoeing and the outdoors while growing up in Cedar Rapids and developed skills for taxidermy and ornithology while studying for his undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1961. In 1965, he was the sixth Hasek to receive his DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
Ondrej meet Nancy Ellen Boehm of Oak Park IL while they were both students at the University of Iowa. They married in 1963. Ondrej joined the dental practice of his father Vaclav Ondrej in downtown Cedar Rapids, where he continued to practice after his father's passing in 1971, and provided dental care in downtown Cedar Rapids for 44 years. He continued to work after his cancer diagnosis and retired in late July 2009. His style of dentistry was special ?" he provided highly individual patient care. He enjoyed interacting with his patients and over the years cared for multiple generations of families. Ondrej’s retirement marked the end of over 100 years of Haseks practicing dentistry in downtown Cedar Rapids.
Ondrej had a great variety of interests and passions. He highly valued education and the sciences. He enjoyed singing with the Harmony Hawks, and serving on the Linn County Sheep Producers and Indian Creek Nature Center boards. A life long resident of Iowa he was proud of the state and its natural beauty. He enjoyed travel domestically and abroad. He was a foodie and cooked for family and friends and greatly enjoyed fine dining.
Ondrej was generous and kind and an excellent caregiver to patients as well as his family. He was an outstanding husband and set an excellent example for his children. With his natural smile and positive outlook, those who knew him cherished Ondrej’s humor and warmth.
In accordance with Ondrej’s wishes there will be no funeral or visitation.
