Olive Eliza (Dettmer) Smith, 92, a resident of Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, died there Monday, September 1, 2003, following a brief illness. Services: 1 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Allen Christopherson. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 4) and one hour prior to services on Friday. Burial: Blodgett Cemetery, rural Central City.
Olive was born the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Meier) Dettmer on October 1, 1910, in Garnavillo, Iowa. She graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1928 and attended Iowa State College. She was united in marriage to Verle L. Smith on August 8, 1934. He died in 1990. Olive was born again in 1937 and was in fellowship at Marion Gospel Hall. Olive and Verle lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and later moved to a farm in Central City, where they farmed until 1966. They then moved to a home on Highway 13 between Central City and Marion. Since 1997, Olive had been a resident at Linn Manor Care Center, where she passed away on September 1, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Verle L. Smith; her parents; and two sisters, Evelyn Gull and Lulu Leitgen.
She is survived by her children, James D. Smith and wife Patricia of Portland, Oregon, Mary Ann Hodges and husband Robert of Long Beach, California, and John N. Smith and wife Betsy of Godfrey, Illinois. Olive has seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, David and Penny Hodges, Trudy and Scott Blackwell and son Jackson, Malaika and Jackson Clelland, Kelly Lasorsa and daughter, Krystal, Chad and Linnae Smith and sons, Zachary and Kole, Elliot Smith and Tyler Smith.
