Olene Longaker, 94, resident of Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marion and Montezuma, died there Friday, January 12, 2007, following a short illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 15, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by Rev. Kevin Jones. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. Graveside Committal Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Montezuma Cemetery, Montezuma, Iowa.
Surviving is a daughter, Judy Decker of Marion; five grandchildren, Dave (Marjean) Decker of Galena, Illinois, Debbie (Kevin) Ryan of Marion, Doug (Erika Myers) Decker of Central City, Jolene Opperman of Wellsburg and Andy (Brandy) Brocka of Colorado; ten great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, John Brocka of New Hartford; and a sister-in-law, Faye Cranston of Dysart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David, who died August 4, 1998, a daughter, Mary Brocka, two brothers, Bert and Bill, two sisters, Mae and Ocie, and her aunt and uncle, Lela and Ray Cranston, who helped raise Olene.
Olene was born the daughter of William and Iva (DeWald) Cranston on November 21, 1912 in Cestos, Oklahoma. She graduated from New Sharon High School in 1930 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids and William Penn College in Oskaloosa. After receiving her teaching certificate, Olene taught school in a one-room school house in New Sharon. On May 17, 1937, she was united in marriage to David Longaker. Olene continued teaching for over twenty-five years in Beacon and Alburnett.
Olene was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, Daughters of the Nile, and Order of the Eastern Star.
