Norval was born June 5, 1959, the son of Norval and Johnnie Pearl Dickson, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and excelled in athletics. Norval was an outstanding basketball, baseball, football and track athlete. He was later inducted into the Washington High School Hall of Fame. With great athletic success, Norval decided to play basketball at Grandview Junior College in Des Moines, Iowa, and later received a scholarship to play at Chapman University in California.
Norval was a proud father whose children and family were the light of his life and he enjoyed every moment he spent with them. He devoted his best years to coaching, teaching, and mentoring youth. Norval was blessed with amazing athletic ability and coaching style, he used the gift of sports to reach thousands of young men and women and their parents. He spent his most recent days coaching basketball and softball at El Modena High School in Orange, California. His fun loving personality, all of the “one liners”, and his tough coaching style brought joy and love to everyone me met. A year and a half ago, he was hospitalized with acute renal disease and continued to coach and entertain each of us. He will be missed by all. May he rest in eternal peace.
