Norman Chris Nielsen, 84, of Springville passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015, at Bickford Cottage in Marion from complications of Alzheimer’s. Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in Marion by Rev. Dr. Howard Chapman. Family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will take place at the Springville Cemetery at a later date with Masonic Rites. Arrangements made by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion.
Survivors include his wife Sharon of Springville; three daughters, Sandy (Tim) Schneekloth of Marion, Deb (Jerry) Hinshaw of Victor, Kris (Bob) Brunkhorst of Waverly; seven grandchildren, Meghan and Alison Schneekloth, Jeremy (Amanda) Hinshaw, John (Holly) Hinshaw, Shary Hinshaw, Karalynn and Zach Brunkhorst; one great-grandson, Jace Hinshaw; his brother, Paul (Karen) Nielsen; one nephew; three nieces; and sister in law, Sara (Sally) Carson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Norm was born September 27, 1930, to Peter M. and Esther Lenore (Gibson) Nielsen in Springville, Iowa. After graduating from Springville High School in 1948, he entered the United States Army and served in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. Norm married Sharon Lee Carson on May 15, 1955, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He worked for Rockwell Collins as a Government Avionics Manager until his retirement in 1987. Following retirement, he was a full time farmer. Norm was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marion where he served on numerous committees and served as an elder for many years. He was a member of the Springville Masonic Lodge #139, the Cedar Rapids Consistory, El Kahir Shrine, OES #107, Springville Community School District Foundation, Springville Telephone Board, Brown Township Insurance Board, and Danish Brotherhood of America. Norm had a love for baseball and was a Chicago Cubs fan since the age of 7.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Milestones, St. Luke’s Hospice, and Bickford Cottage for their compassionate care they showed them and Norm.
