Norman Edward Hammond, 97, of 150 Thompson Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Howard Chapman. Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2012, where a Masonic Service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Private Family Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Arlene Schmatt (Mike Perry) of Cedar Rapids; a son, Bruce E. (Ruby) Hammond of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Arlene (Scott) Walters of Marion, Eric (Heather) Schmatt of Cedar Rapids, and Jeffrey (Marci) Schmatt of Mount Vernon; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan Bliss, Nick, Nathan, and Brett Walters, Alexsis and Carsen Schmatt, and Andrea and Danielle Hallier; and a sister, Alberta Cray of Cedar Rapids
Norm was preceded in death by his wife Arlene; his parents; four sisters, Edith Lucille Bachman, Marian LaVerna Franks, Evelyn Oxley, and Alice Brown; one brother, Elwood; and an infant daughter, Ruby.
Norman was born December 12, 1914 in Clarence, Cedar County, Iowa, the son of Harry Basil Hammond and Elsie M. Shaffer. On June 1, 1935, he married Arlene Ruby Morehouse. Norm worked as an Inspector/Quality Assurance, Gage & Instrument Repair & Calibration for Harnischfeger Corp., retiring after 45 years of service. Norm was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marion, Past Master Marion Lodge No. 6, Former Grand Tyler of The Grand Lodge of Iowa A.F. and A.M., El Kahir Shrine, Apollo Commandry, Scottish Rite, High Twelve, Council of Royal and Select Masters, Past Patron Marion Chapter No. 183 Order of the Eastern Star, and Board Member/President of Harnco Employers Credit Union.
